Things to do in Galveston before a cruise
A spare afternoon before you board, or a day after? Here is how to spend it on the island.
Every seat is protectedClose to the port
- The Historic Strand District. Walkable Victorian streets of shops, galleries, and restaurants, right by Terminals 25 and 28.
- Pleasure Pier. A Gulf-front amusement pier with rides and games along Seawall Boulevard.
- Seawall Boulevard and the beaches. Miles of beachfront for a walk, a swim, or a seafood lunch with a view.
Worth the short drive
- Moody Gardens. Rainforest and aquarium pyramids, a reliable family stop.
- Bishop's Palace. Galveston's landmark 1892 mansion, one of the island's architectural highlights.
- Galveston Island State Park. Beaches and bay trails if you want nature over crowds.
Fitting it around your cruise
An extra afternoon is easiest if you arrive the day before and stay at a park-and-cruise hotel, which leaves cruise morning as a short transfer. Flying in the same day is tighter, so read the arrival timing guide before you plan sightseeing.
Either way, a Houston to Galveston shuttle from IAH or Hobby keeps the logistics simple, and there is plenty to eat near the port.
